Sinus Cleansing, Irrigation or Rinse - Clearing Nasal Congestion and Infection

Anyone suffering from nasal congestion (sinus infection) may benefit from sinus cleansing (sinus irrigation or rinse).

Although this is an ancient technique, it is one that is only recently becoming more popular for those wishing to try an alternative practice as a home remedy.

With the help of a tea kettle-type device with an elongated spout, the Neti pot can just as easily be used as a general preventative for allergies or hay fever as well as for a cleansing practice.

Although there are an increasing number of nasal irrigation pre packaged kits available on the market, in not only health food stores but also online, if you have access to a Neti pot or a nasal bulb syringe, the ingredients for a basic sinus cleansing solution are common household items. For the 1/2 tsp salt, you can use anything (kosher, sea salt) that is not iodized. You will also need 8 ounces of filtered or distilled water and 1/2 tsp baking soda.

To prepare the sinus cleansing mixture, warm the water, mix the ingredients, and then pour the solution into the Neti pot. You'll need to be over a sink with your head tilted at a 45-degree angle for success; the spout inserted into the higher nostril. It should form a comfortable but relaxed seal in the nose.

Carefully and slowly allow a steady stream of the solution to flow into your upper nostril for no less than 10 seconds while breathing through your mouth. The key to nasal irrigation is the proper head position, with the forehead remaining at least level with the chin but preferably slightly higher.

This process is what will unclog the congestion. If it is mucus that has clogged the sinuses, it may take several attempts for the solution to pass through the upper nostril and onto the lower one. If the head is in the right position, you will be able to breathe with ease.

Gently blow your nose at first and then after every rinse to remove all loosened mucus. When the first nostril is cleared, mix a fresh solution and switch to the other side of the nose. Remember to adjust your head when switching sides during sinus cleansing.

The nasal bulb syringe or a small squirt bottle can both work equally well - bend over the sink and squeeze gently until the sinus cleansing solution passes from one side to the other. For throat irritation, any remaining water can be used as a gargle.

There are a few precautions that should be taken. If any complication seems extreme, consult a physician. Some people with acute symptoms should avoid the sinus cleansing procedure to avoid the spread of bacteria. If the forehead is too high, the solution will drain into the mouth.

If a nasal irrigation results in gagging or ear pain, it's likely being done too forcefully. There also may be some coughing if some of the solution drains into the throat.
