A note about Autism and Music Therapy - A Useful TreatmentIn natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases. In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies. Now, more than ever, parents of autistic children are more educated and better informed on new types of treatments and ways of teaching their special children. One such type of therapy that is getting lots of attention is music therapy. Recent studies on autism and music are showing quite promising results when it comes to music therapy for autistic children. Data shows that children who were given sensory integration therapy displayed less autistic symptoms than children who had only gone through traditional autism therapies. Many people who deal with autism say that it’s the repetitive movements, making noises, and limited interests that often get in the way of an autistic child learning properly, so the idea that music therapy would help to ease these symptoms is pleasing to many. Skeptics of the autism and music connection still say that much of the equipment necessary for this type of therapy is too costly to invest in for the promise of maybe. Still, parents of autistic children are more than willing to give it a try. Experts say that the need for the expensive equipment that is often used varies with each child, so it might be worth it to talk to your own therapist and see what he or she thinks your child’s needs are.
Autism and Music Therapy - How it Works Before you do, though, let’s talk about what music therapy is and how it works. Music therapy is essentially the use of music that is pleasing to an autistic child to help them communicate, learn and play. For instance, a music therapist and a child’s parents may determine that the autistic child has a need to socially interact. By offering music as a soothing medium, the autistic child can learn to interact with others by rolling a ball or using sticks to “play” the drums with another. In this same way, eye contact can be encouraged by rhythmic clapping in front of the eyes and encouraging the child to imitate the action. Often, the child’s favorite music can be used to teach skills such as staying with a group of children or sitting still in a chair. It has also been found that music therapy is very helpful in teaching autistic children to speak, since so many of them seem to relate to music. It seems that music is a universal language that requires no speaking at all, and autistic children will often sing, even when they cannot speak. Indeed, the potential benefits of the link between autism and music are very promising. For autism and music, while the exact techniques of a music therapist may vary, the concept and perhaps the results are quite similar. For many parents who have chosen the music therapy route for their autistic children, the results are amazing. It’s a therapy that many parents now feel is essential to their child’s overall wellbeing and happiness, so they feel it is worth the cost.
