No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

It is estimated that more than 15 million Americans suffer from acid reflux disease (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD), in which acidic contents from the stomach flow up into the esophagus, cause discomfort (cannot tolerate it), inflammation, and even scarring.

Acid reflux symptoms you might experience are a burning pain in your chest (heartburn), an irritation in your throat and / or acid taste in your mouth, a chronic cough, bad breath, belching, difficulty swallowing, nausea, as well as laryngitis.

The treatment of gastritis or acid reflux depends on the cause as well as how severe it is. Many people try taking antacids to help make stomach acid less acidic, or they try targeted medications prescribed by a doctor to reduce stomach acid. This is, at best, a short-term solution.

When avoiding foods for acid reflux recovery, also stay away from carbonated beverages, citrus fruits and their juices, raw onions, red meat, unhealthy fats and oils, as well as vinegar, including pickles.

Instead, eat only bland foods, trying such things as soda crackers, toast, plain whole wheat pasta or noodles, baked or broiled potatoes, clear liquids, and an occasional banana until all symptoms have gone.

Complementing foods for acid reflux relief are some important eating habits.

For long term relief, try avoiding lying down or excessive bending after meals. Do try to relax with a book or listen to music quietly about 45 minutes (remaining upright) before jumping into anything that might interfere with normal digestion. Try elevating the head of bed 6 to 8 inches when you do lie down, and drink plenty of liquids.

Eat small frequent meals, 4 to 6 times throughout the day. Since many people experience symptoms at night, avoid eating any meal 3 to 4 hours before going to bed. This puts less pressure on the digestive system.

When you suffer from acid reflux and are planning meals, factor in plenty of high fiber vegetables and fruits to your menu - these are useful foods for acid reflux relief and healing. These foods, along with whole grains such as rice, oats and cornmeal, as well as nuts and seeds, will keep your intestinal flora balanced and your bowels moving smoothly.

Water is the best beverage to drink at any time.

Remember - heavy sauces, gravies or salad dressings can prolong the digestive process, as can mixing starches such as pasta or potatoes with red meats or dairy products, as this demands the digestive system to work hard producing several types of stomach enzymes to help break the mixture of foods down. This takes several hours to accomplish, with all these acids in the stomach.

Actually, digestion begins in the mouth, so it is vitally important to chew your food carefully. Amylase, a digestive enzyme of the mouth, targets starches immediately. They, in turn, signal the stomach to get its enzyme cycle going by beginning the production of the pancreatic enzymes. In addition, it is also important to relax while you are eating.

Consider boosting your stomach function naturally by incorporating probiotics and / or supplemental fiber into your diet to help restore the natural acid balance of the gastrointestinal tract; these, too, are useful foods for acid reflux relief, prevention and recovery.
