Basically, sweating is a method of eliminating toxins from the organ that has the largest surface area – the skin. Via its pores, the skin plays a complementary role in detoxification, as do the other organs with similar functions such as the kidneys, liver, bowels and lymphatic system. Since the process of being in a steam bath or sauna raises the body’s temperature, sweat is produced to counteract the effects of elevated temperature; sweat cools the body. Sweat is also said to transform the toxins from a lipid soluble or oil soluble form, into a water soluble format, assisting the elimination process. In addition, while in the sauna or steam bath, one’s blood circulation increases, while the pores on one’s skin also open up, and these changes further aid the cleansing and detoxification process. More recently, infrared saunas have become very popular. These saunas are more energy efficient and while they do not use water, the principles of sauna detox remain largely the same.
