A note about How Does Sauna Benefit Health?

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. Taking these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of certain holistic remedies.

The health benefits accrued by users from sauna baths are many and varied. 15-20 minutes of sauna is considered equivalent to 1-2 hours of brisk walking or 1 hour of cardiovascular exercise. The benefits can be described thus:

  • One of the main effects of sauna baths is that it opens up skin pores (skin is often referred to as the 3rd kidney, because it is believed to be responsible for eliminating 30% of the body's waste), thereby facilitating the process of flushing out of toxins and other impurities from the circulating blood. This results in a feeling of vitality and freshness that the sauna user reports, since this helps in the cleansing of the body and rendering it toxin free via sweating to an extent. Saunas are great for detoxification.

  • Sauna benefits the joints and muscles, too. Sauna baths relaxes muscles and frees them of accumulated tension and strain. It also relieves joint pain as the heat from the steam improves blood flow effectively to all parts of the body, and contracted, stiff muscles and joints are relieved of pain and discomfort.

  • The sauna experience is also usually recommended for those with the goal of weight loss and weight control. Sauna baths speeds up metabolism (increased heart and pulse rate), which facilitates weight loss. To some, this aspect is why sauna baths are preferred over exercise to achieving weight loss.

  • Sauna benefits the mind, too. Sauna baths are great stress relievers, and helps to bring the mind and body to a state of relaxation and released tension. Saunas are enjoyed for their stress relieving benefits by some.

  • Sauna baths are reported to have beneficial effects on those suffering from sleep disorders and insomnia. It induces sleep and relaxation.

  • Further, sauna benefits one’s immune system. During a sauna bath, skin temperatures soar to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, instantaneously causing a fever-like situation. This boosts the immune system functioning of the body.

  • The increased temperature also helps to kill harmful micro-organisms, like bacteria and viruses, in the body.

  • Steam also is proven to be very useful in relieving problems like colds, stuffy nose, bronchitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, etc. Sauna baths help in alleviating symptoms of the same.

  • Though sauna baths are known to provide a number of health benefits, for some people, sauna is a leisure activity that also doubles as beauty treatment to make their skin glow with good health. Sauna thus also serves a very cosmetic purpose.

As you can see, the health benefits of saunas are many and varied, and regular usage of this therapy can bring much improved health to individuals. All in all, sauna is an excellent therapy for promoting good health.
