What are some details of the Blood Type O diet?
The Blood Type O constitutes the majority of the world's population. Dr. D'Adamo, author of Eat Right for Your Type, theorizes that the ancestors of these individuals consumed mostly meat, as they hunted avidly.
The personality trails of the successful hunter remain in the Type O personality today - leadership, extroversion, focus and boundless energy reserves. However, when presented with stressful situations, Type Os can react with the extremes of these traits, such as the need to dominate a situation (or another individual) and resulting aggression. Bouts of excessive anger and hyperactivity can result, and the Type O lifestyle should work to temper these tendencies.
People with Type O blood fare best on intense physical exercise which channels these powerful emotions. Anger management strategies can also be helpful. Ideal exercises for Type O's include high intensity aerobics, martial arts, contact sports, and running, where the spirit of competition and intense exertion can be beneficial.
Individuals with this blood type who lead sedentary lives will suffer from sluggish thyroid activity, resistance to insulin, and weight gain.
Type Os build up a great deal of adrenaline and noradrenalin as part of the stress response, which can lead to risky behaviors and mood swings.
Though strong digestion allows the frequent consumption of meat and difficult-to-process fats, Type Os can also suffer from the overproduction of acid and resulting gastrointestinal discomfort. Due to "thinner" blood, some Type Os suffer from bleeding disorders.
The Type O's metabolism has been designed to efficiently process calories; however, it uses carbohydrates poorly, resulting in increased body fat and hypothyroidism. The immune response has been shown to be overly aggressive, and the risk of autoimmune disease can be higher than with other blood types.
The leading reason for weight gain among Type O's is the gluten found in wheat products and, to a lesser extent, lentils, corn, and kidney beans, according to Dr. D'Adamo.
A high protein Blood Type O diet should be maintained, and Type Os can supplement with protein shakes to prevent inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. High quality lean organic meat should be a dietary staple. Rich oiled cold water fish should also be included in the Blood Type O diet.
Dairy generally must be avoided, as Type O's have difficulty digesting dairy products. Absolutely no wheat or wheat based products should be included in the Blood Type O diet, as they are highly problematic for Type Os.
Oats should also be eliminated if one has digestive or weight problems. Coffee should be replaced with green tea, as it has a tendency to aggravate acidity in the stomach. Beans should be limited, as their protein sources can not be metabolized as well by this blood type. Other strategies to control high stomach acid levels include using ginger, supplementing with slippery elm bark or turmeric root, and avoiding milk, beer and similar irritants such as oranges and tangerines.
Nuts and seeds can be used in the Blood Type O diet to supplement protein, especially walnuts, which have detoxification properties. Some nuts that should be avoided include beechnut, sunflower seeds and chestnuts, due to lectin levels. Vegetables containing lectin should also be avoided, including leeks, yucca, potatoes and cauliflower.
Type Os should monitor their substitution of starches for vegetables. Weight loss can be facilitated with the inclusion of antioxidant-rich berries. Many fruits, such as pineapple, work to minimize inflammation, which can be a persistent problem for Type Os. Again, fruits with active lectins should be removed from the Blood Type O diet.
Oils should be mainly of the monounsaturated type, such as olive oil, and those with the omega series such as flaxseed. However, Type Os can consume a range of oils with a bit more freedom than the other blood types.
As to spices, only nutmeg and mace have been shown to have negative effects. The Blood Type O diet can be used as a preventative measure against the gastrointestinal, acid-related disease that can affect Type Os, such as Crohn's disease, ulcers, and gastro-esophageal reflux disease.
Gentian (Gentiana lutea) and the more readily available ginger root work wonders on an acidic stomach. Probiotic bacteria and herbal supplements such as thyme, oregano, and rosemary can be used to treat ulcers. These dietary practices, in conjunction with sound lifestyle modifications, will allow Type Os to function at their optimum in modern society.
