Diabetes Early Signs and Symptoms

What are some diabetes early signs and symptoms which would serve as warning signals of the impending ailment?

Diabetes refers to several different diseases under one blanket term. The most common types include Type 1 or immune mediated diabetes mellitus (formerly called juvenile onset diabetes), Type 2 or insulin resistant diabetes mellitus (previously called adult onset diabetes), and gestational diabetes mellitus, which occurs during some pregnancies.

All types of diabetes have similar symptoms, due to the fact that all result in too much sugar (glucose) in the blood. The high levels of glucose occur because the body cannot remove the glucose, process it, and deliver it to cells in the body. Cells need glucose as a source of energy. However, the reasons for why the body fails to use glucose in the blood differ in each of the three main types.

Millions of people now suffer from some form of diabetes. Diabetes early signs showing that the body has begun to resist insulin can occur up to a decade prior to onset of the actual disease. Early treatment of symptoms will decrease the chances of developing diabetes and its complications, and will ensure optimum health for years to come.

A note about Diabetes Early Signs and Symptoms

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Diabetes early signs and symptoms may appear singly, or in coordination with one another. Be vigilant about changes in your health and notice any new or troubling signs your body may be displaying. Some of the most important diabetes early signs, warning of insulin resistance and approaching diabetes include:

  • Blurry vision

  • Dry, itchy skin

  • Elevated triglycerides levels - Excess weight or obesity can raise these levels, and obesity predisposes people to diabetes. The excessive intake not only of fats, but of refined carbohydrates can increase the levels as well.

  • Erectile dysfunction in men

  • Excessive thirst

  • Extreme hunger

  • Fatigue, unusual tiredness or drowsiness - Chronic fatigue develops when the body’s cells can no longer obtain glucose in sufficient quantities. The body also develops insulin resistance.

  • Frequent or recurring skin, gum, bladder or vaginal yeast infections

  • Frequent urination is another diabetes early sign

  • Hypertension and high blood pressure - Some experts theorize that this condition may be a result of the large amounts of insulin needed to keep blood sugar levels normal.

  • Inability to concentrate - With fluctuating blood sugar levels, the brain, which requires a constant steady supply of glucose to function properly, begins to work less efficiently. Memory loss, disordered thoughts or absent mindedness may occur.

  • Increased abdominal fat - Weight distribution centered in the abdominal area, specifically the intestines, can increase the risk for developing diabetes.

  • Irritability or mood swings - Fluctuating blood sugar levels can create mood swings, especially if the glucose levels have become low. Stressful situations also alter the body's glucose management, which can result in fluctuating blood sugar values. For the diabetic, irritability can be traced to a sudden drop or increase in blood sugar, caused by metabolic changes and stress chemicals, such as cortisol; as well as to the fact that the body has begun to divert glucose away from parts of the brain that affect personality or personal interaction, towards the more vital centers which affect movement, coordination, etc.

  • Low HDL levels - A normal HDL level falls at approximately 40 mg/DL. HDL measures the level “good” cholesterol in the blood. This cholesterol removes excess cholesterol and can help protect against heart disease. Low levels of good cholesterol increase the risk of coronary heart disease, especially if other lipids in the blood, like LDL and triglycerides, stay at high levels.

  • Obesity - Individuals with a high proportion of excess fat in the body will most likely have insulin resistance.

  • Slow healing wounds, or sores and bruises that mend slowly, are also diabetes early signs and symptoms.

  • Sudden, unusual, unexplained weight loss despite the fact that more calories are being consumed due to excessive hunger pangs.

  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, or feelings of pain which indicate poor circulation or nerve damage in the affected area.

Some members of the population have a genetic predisposition to diabetes. Some ethnic groups, including Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, certain Latinos (not Cuban Hispanics), and African Americans have a higher incidence of the disease. In addition, weight, age, a sedentary lifestyle and family history or other hereditary factors play large roles. Families should note that diabetes early signs and warning symptoms will be similar in children.
