Fibromyalgia Treatments - Conventional, Alternative and Natural

Here, some fibromyalgia treatments, including conventional as well as natural and alternative, are discussed.

While there isn't yet a medical cure for fibromyalgia, there are some treatments available that include self-care and medication. The emphasis for these treatments is placed on dealing with the individual symptoms and trying to improve the sufferer's overall health.

There are quite a few medications that have been helpful to some people, although the FDA has only approved two for use on fibromyalgia - Lyrica and Cymbalta. One reduces pain and seizures, while the other is an antidepressant.

Analgesics such as Tylenol might help with the stiffness and pain that people suffer with fibromyalgia. Other medicines like Advil and Ibuprofen, which can be purchased without a prescription, have not proven to be as effective when taken by themselves. Some people prefer to go the natural route and use natural pain killers, such as chamomile, which can be used in a good tasting tea.

A note about Fibromyalgia Treatments - Conventional, Alternative and Natural

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Antidepressants have also been used as fibromyalgia treatments. However, it is important to keep in mind that fibromyalgia is not depression, and that the antidepressants are often used for their other benefits, and not for their ability to influence emotional health. Elavil, for example, might be prescribed to help with sleep and pain relief. Cymbalta might be able to help with pain.

Therapy is also one of the popular fibromyalgia treatments. Physical therapy can help restore muscle balance and might be able to reduce certain types of pain. A physical therapist can also teach you exercises that can be done at home.

Another useful fibromyalgia treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy, which could help you learn better ways of dealing with stressful situations. You might attend therapy sessions through individual counseling, or through tapes and classes. Along with therapy, you might also want to consider stress reducing activities such as meditation, journaling, or even yoga. Combining therapy with stress reduction can be helpful in some cases.

Lately, alternative care has also been used for fibromyalgia. Acupuncture is getting positive feedback. It can change blood flow and help relieve some symptoms in some people who suffer from the disease. Massage therapy has also been effective for some people. Massage therapy can help increase the flow of nutrients, relax muscles, and improve blood circulation. Likewise, visiting a chiropractor and having spinal adjustments would help decrease pain and improve functions.

Alternative therapies for pain and stress management aren't novel and can be used in a complementing way to other medications and self-care at home. Some people have been practicing some therapies, like meditation and yoga for example, for centuries. Their use has simply been popularized recently, particularly with people suffering from chronic illnesses, like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Most of these fibromyalgia treatments are able to relieve stress and diminish pain safely, and a few are even gaining approval in conventional medicine. Still, some practices continue to be untested because they haven't been satisfactorily studied.

Most of the treatments used by fibromyalgia patients revolve around self-care at home. Keeping stress levels down, getting enough exercise, improving the quality of your sleep, pacing yourself, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are all important when it comes to your overall health and well-being.
