Pregnancy Gingivitis - Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and Remedies

Besides morning sickness, swollen ankles, and stretch marks, pregnancy gingivitis is one of the most common ailments that a woman can suffer while pregnant.

Gingivitis during pregnancy is caused by an increase in hormone levels, and it can lead to red, swollen gums that can even bleed from time to time.

Nearly half of all pregnant women experience gingivitis, according to the American Academy of Peridontology. It can occur at any time during the pregnancy. For that reason, it is recommended that pregnant women pay regular visits to their dentist, in order to keep up-to-date on their cleanings and dental care.

A note about Pregnancy Gingivitis - Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and Remedies

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Hormonal changes, including the increased level of progesterone, can lead to many changes in the woman's body during pregnancy. In fact, hormonal changes might be one of the causes of morning sickness, too. It can also create a better environment for the growth of bacteria which causes gingivitis. In addition, it can make gum tissue more sensitive to plaque. If you already suffer from gum disease, then the condition might worsen if you become pregnant.

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of pregnancy gingivitis include red swollen gums that can bleed when brushing your teeth. Sometimes, pregnancy tumors can develop, too. These look like large red bumps and generally develop near the gum line. They can be very painful, but are not cancerous or contagious. These tumors often occur in pregnant women who also have gingivitis.

Prevention, Remedies and Good Dental Habits

Practicing good oral hygiene is a good way to prevent pregnancy gingivitis from occurring or getting worse. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing on a daily basis is very important. If you want to create your own mouthwash, you can make one out of hydrogen peroxide and water. Just remember to spit it out and not swallow it. It is also important to visit your dentist on a regular basis.

Further, it is crucial to know that even with pregnancy gingivitis, you still have to brush and floss every day, even though it might be painful. In addition, it is important to keep your diet in mind, too, and to eat a healthy mix of fruits, vegetables, fibers, and proteins. Try to limit your sugary foods and caffeinated beverages.

There are natural ways to help treat the pain associated with gingivitis during pregnancy. Applying ice to the affected gums might bring temporary relief. Making a paste of baking soda and water and applying the mixture directly onto your gums might also be beneficial. In addition, chewing sugarless gum will help stimulate saliva, which could help prevent gingivitis from occurring.

It is still important to pay a visit to your dentist, however, as pregnancy gingivitis can sometimes lead to other diseases of the gums that can be harder to correct. Combining natural remedies with good dental hygiene and regular visits to the dentist can help keep your gums, teeth, and overall oral health in check and in good working order.
