The shoulder is a complex joint comprising of several bones, muscles and ligaments. Between the top of the arm bone (humerus) and the tip of the shoulder (acromion), there are tendons of the rotator cuff as well as the bursa which protects these tendons. When this bursa gets inflamed, then the result is bursitis of the shoulder. In a normal situation, the said tendons are able to slide effortlessly within the joint. When the tendons and bursa get inflamed, they thicken, and this causes a loss of space in the area.
