Preventing and Treating Bursitis - Conventional Ways and Suggestions

This article discusses some conventional ways and suggestions for preventing and treating bursitis.

Prevention is the best form of cure, hence it is important to be careful with the joints, especially when one is commencing an exercise program, indulging in strenuous workout programs like high-intensity aerobic exercises, etc.

A note about Preventing and Treating Bursitis - Conventional Ways and Suggestions

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Without proper guidance and with incorrect technique, one might hurt the joints, causing possible bursitis. Some common methods of preventing bursitis from occurring are:

  • Consult your physician or physical trainer in the gym before starting on an exercise program or regime.

  • Pick a pair of shoes that are comfortable and offer support to your feet, ankles, and reduce the impact on your knees while exercising.

  • Always do a few warm up exercises and stretches before commencing your workout at the gymnasium.

  • Protect your kneecaps by wearing appropriate kneepads while exercising, cycling long distances, or playing various games like basketball and football.

  • If your knees hurt while exercising, stop and ensure that you apply cold ice packs to the knees. While resting, keep a pillow below your feet to rest your legs at an elevation.

  • Similarly, for elbows and shoulders, do not attempt to pick up high intensity dumbbells while doing weight-training exercises. Start with light weight dumbbells and do more repetitions to avoid straining your shoulders and elbows.

  • While playing tennis, one must not strain the elbow if it begins to hurt after playing for a while. Applying ice to the elbow when it hurts will help relieve some symptoms.

  • For people in occupations that involve physical labor and straining the joints on a daily basis, it is advisable to rest the joints as much as possible when one is not at work.
  • Conventional Treatment for Bursitis

The method of treating bursitis would depend on whether the bursitis is infective or non-infective. Do note that these methods are within the domain of conventional medicine, methods which we do not recommend while there are safer natural solutions which are at least just as effective.

  • In the case of treating bursitis which is infective, the physician might aspirate the infected fluid from the area of infection. The aspirated fluid is then sent for pathological studies to detect the strain of bacteria that is causing the infection. Depending on the pathology reports, the physician will prescribe an appropriate antibiotic course of medication.

  • In the case of treating bursitis which is non-infective, conventional treatment will include ice application, as well as resting the affected joint completely for a specific period of time that will involve no exercise or physical activity in the joint. Resting might include keeping the joint at an elevation. All strenuous work involving the joint should be avoided, including any direct force to it.

  • Medication to reduce pain and inflammation could include anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or aspirin.

  • If the pain is severe, the physician might inject the infected area with a mild anesthetic and steroid to provide instant relief from pain.

  • Infective bursitis that does not appear to decrease with antibiotic treatment or with the aspiration of infected fluid might require surgery. Surgery involving infective bursitis is usually performed as an inpatient procedure.

  • Non-infective bursitis that does not subside with conventional treatments will also require surgery, but surgery involving non-infective bursitis is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. For this case, the bursa is removed from that joint or location without affecting the surrounding muscles or ligaments.
  • Once again, do note that the methods of treating bursitis which have been discussed in this article are part of conventional medicine. Drugs and surgeries are not only expensive, but often also come with many undesirable side effects and complications.
