Gout develops due to excess levels of uric acid in the blood. Cherries have been shown to lower uric acid levels in the body, thereby reducing gout pain - this property of this fruit partly explains the cherries and gout connection.
A study at the University of California showed that consuming a daily serving of cherries significantly lowered the blood uric acid levels of women. In the study, the subjects were given fresh cherries to eat, but it is thought that the same benefit can be gained from eating dried cherries or drinking cherry juice.
In another study, subjects ate a bowl of 45 fresh cherries, then had laboratory measurements run on their blood in intervals of one-and-a-half, three, and five hours afterward. The results showed a decrease in the subjects' plasma urate levels over the five hours after their meal of cherries.
How else are cherries and gout linked? Cherries contain anthocyanins - the pigments that give them their color. Far from serving a simply aesthetic purpose, anthocyanins are also believed to possess a unique ability to lower body inflammation. Researchers believe that anthocyanins are what cause cherries to decrease blood urates, and the mechanism by which cherry juice causes gout relief.
Since there has not yet been a great deal of research done on cherries or cherry juice, the proper therapeutic levels have not yet been determined. However, many people benefit from drinking about two tablespoons of cherry juice concentrate daily. Alternatively, one or two servings of fresh or dried cherries are thought to be the minimum for producing a benefit.
Of course, in harnessing the beneficial connection between cherries and gout, it is important to remember that individuals respond to treatments differently, so experimenting and figuring out what works for you is the best way to find out the proper dose / form of cherries that will remedy your gout.
Cherries are an excellent source of many important nutrients, and seem to possess a unique ability to reduce the incidence of gout attacks, and produce relief for those suffering from gout by reducing inflammation and pain.
