Recent studies have shown that your diet, or what you eat and don’t eat, may be affecting your fibromyalgia pain. So, if you found out that the way you eat could help your fibromyalgia, would you make sure to eat the right foods from now on?

Lots of people say that yes, more than anything, they want their pain to go away. The idea is that if you avoid many different kinds of food, and begin eating the nutrients your body needs to stay strong and healthy, your fibromyalgia symptoms will probably subside.

The diet and fibromyalgia link may in fact be even stronger, with some people who suffer from fibromyalgia having reported going into remission when paying more attention to their diet.

Further, many doctors have found that there are other conditions that fibromyalgia sufferers also have, which may be “overlapping” with their fibromyalgia symptoms.

For these conditions, diet has proven to help, so even if your fibromyalgia isn’t helped by your diet, there could be another condition that you have, which will allow you to feel much better by monitoring what you eat.

Here are some tips on diet and fibromyalgia that may help you to gain relief for your symptoms. Specifically, these are some foods you should avoid.

  • Aspartame has been found to make fibromyalgia symptoms much worse. This substance is thought to trigger the event in the central pain receptor of the brain that causes pain to go from acute to chronic.

  • MSG and nitrates have been shown to cause the same effects as aspartame, so when you avoid foods containing them, you will likely ease your pain. These substances are essentially strong poisons, so avoiding them goes beyond the diet and fibromyalgia consideration.

  • Sugars and simple carbohydrates have been shown to cause fibromyalgia symptoms to become worse because of the likelihood of chronic yeast infection, which has been found to be a secondary condition to fibromyalgia. While the jury is still out on this way of thinking, many people who suffer from this painful condition are willing to try eliminating these foods. In any case, these substances are bad for health, and avoiding them is again beyond the diet and fibromyalgia consideration.

  • As mentioned in the previous point, fibromyalgia can sometimes be linked to chronic yeast infection, and gluten intolerance is another secondary illness that is sometimes found in fibromyalgia sufferers. Try a gluten-free diet for a while to see if your symptoms improve.

  • Caffeine, including chocolate, tea, coffee and cola, has been found to make fatigue associated with fibromyalgia worse. When you experience a crash when the caffeine wears off, this can cause your fatigue to worsen. The good news is that cutting caffeine out of the diet has shown to result in improvements within a week.

  • Dairy products, and in many cases, milk, have been shown to make fibromyalgia symptoms worse. Some people, however, have actually found that milk helps them, so this particular point in the diet and fibromyalgia discussion is subjective to individual cases.

  • Consider eliminating nightshade plants such as tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, as well as bell and chili peppers. These are found to make fibromyalgia pain worse in some people. If, after eliminating these foods, you don’t notice any improvement in your symptoms, you should make sure to begin eating them again, as they have valuable nutrients that your body needs.
