Epilepsy Treatments - Treating Seizures the Natural Way

Epilepsy treatments tend to focus on anti-convuslant medications. However, some of these medications have proven to be harmful - especially when taken by pregnant women.

Many people choose to treat their seizures in a more natural way. So what types of natural treatments are available to those who suffer from seizures?

When it comes to the human body, our organs and various systems all work together to form a whole. For that reason, when looking at epilepsy therapy and treating seizures in a natural way, it is important to look at the entire body and to approach your health holistically.

Paying careful attention to your diet might not be one of the popular epilepsy treatments, but it can help in preventing seizures in a natural way. Substances such as aspartame and ethanol have been known to trigger seizures in some people. In addition, staying away from allergenic foods and taking measures to stabilize your blood glucose level could also be effective.

A note about Epilepsy Treatments - Treating Seizures the Natural Way

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Although it hasn't had a lot of studies, some people on the Atkin's diet have reportedly seen a significant drop in the number of seizures that they experience. The Atkin's Diet focuses largely on low-carbs and high-fat and is less restrictive than other diets.

There are also some nutrients that have been used in epilepsy treatments. These can often lead to the dosage of prescribed medication being lowered and in some cases of lessened severity, replace the medication all together. Most of these can be purchased at health food stores. Some nutrients that have proven effective in reducing seizure frequency are vitamin B6, vitamin E, manganese, taurine, dimethylglycine, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

In some studies, taking vitamin E, as mentioned above, was shown to have helped with the frequency of seizures. However, the studies were inconclusive, so it's difficult to say whether or not it actually worked. Still, vitamin E is good for many different types of afflictions and is fairly safe to take, so it could be included as one of the natural epilepsy treatments.

If you are pregnant and have been taking anti-convulsant medication throughout your pregnancy, then it has also been suggested that you take vitamin K1 at the end of your pregnancy. Studies have shown that women who took vitamin K near the pregnancy's end had babies who did not suffer from hemorrhages and had normal prothrombin times.

Some people with a magnesium deficiency have been known to experience seizures. Due to this, some natural epilepsy interventions have focused on administering magnesium. Magnesium can be taken orally, but should only be considered if it has been determined that you do, indeed, have a magnesium deficiency.

Unfortunately, there have not been many studies done to show the effectiveness of natural remedies when it comes to epilepsy. For that reason, although there does seem to be some promise in this area, it is still wise to consult with your health care practitioner before you embark on any natural course.

In addition, if you are currently taking anti-convulsants and wish to take a more natural route with your epilepsy treatment, never stop taking your medication without discussing it with your physician first.
