A note about Some Lavender Facts and Information

Herbs are God and nature's gifts to us. While the use of herbs and herb remedies has brought excellent results for many people, do note that their health benefits may be limited when they are used in isolation. However, when combined with some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition, the impact on one's health will be greatly magnified.

In natural health and healing, we believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases. We also believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man’s understanding. It is thus a good idea to apply these fundamental health steps no matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem.

  • The lavender plant is a member of the mint family, specifically the Lamiaceae family, the genus containing 25 - 30 species of flowering plants, one of them being lavenders Lavandula.

  • The other common names for this herb are common lavender, English lavender, French lavender, Garden lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandula latifolia, and Lavandula officinalis.

  • The genus includes herbaceous plants, sub-shrubs, and small shrubs.

  • Of the 25 - 30 species of lavender, the English lavender is considered most prized of all, due to the high quality oil which is derived from it.

  • Growing wild in the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean, the lavender herb needs a lot of sunlight to thrive, and grows best in the stony surrounding of this region.

  • Lavender is a shrub with branches that are hardy, and grows to a height of 60 cm typically.

  • A lavender fact which makes the plant distinguishable - the lavender plant is easily recognizable from the broad rootstock and the green shoots that form outgrowths from the branches.

  • Lavender leaves are oval or oblong in shapes that form curly spiral patterns.

  • In its early stages, it may look pretty innocuous, but this compact shrub, once in full bloom from May to September, with its blue, purple, pink and white flowers, takes on an incredibly eye-catching appearance.

  • It also gives out a heady intoxicating perfume if a few leaves or flowers are rubbed on any surface and then brought to the nose.

  • The strong, enticing fragrance comes from the oil glands inside each part of the plant.

  • An interesting and unique lavender fact - this plant does not produce seeds. Propagation is via cuttings or root divisions.

  • The flower of the lavender plant, when distilled, produces what is the essential lavender oil, which has multifaceted uses in the cosmetic and perfumery industries.
