A note about Macular Degeneration Prevention Tips - Diet, Lifestyle and More

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

This condition is most common in people ages 60 and over, and is the leading cause of visual impairment in senior citizens. Because of its prevalence and capacity to seriously damage vision, it is important to take steps to prevent macular degeneration.

Regular eye exams are an important part of eye health, and one of the best ways to for macular degeneration prevention. Prompt diagnosis upon disease onset will enable a physician to begin treatment as soon as possible, thereby greatly improving the likelihood of positive future outcomes. It is important to tell your eye care professional if you have a family history of macular degeneration.

Additionally, it may be advantageous to use the "Amsler grid test" as a method of self-screening - while this doesn’t replace a full evaluation, it may signal the need to seek further help. The Amsler grid is a small black and white grid, and when the lines appear curved (they are straight), it is an indication that there may be a problem.

Another macular degeneration prevention measure is to quit smoking. This may exponentially reduce your risk of macular degeneration, as a literature review found that smokers have two to three times the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, as compared to non-smokers.

Simple healthy lifestyle habits also contribute to macular degeneration prevention. Ophthalmologists recommend eating a balanced diet rich in leafy green vegetables, as well as protecting the eyes from sun exposure with sunglasses specifically geared at blocking ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Eating fruits and nuts frequently also contributes to preventing macular degeneration. In addition, getting enough exercise and staying at a healthy weight may lower your chances of getting age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

It is also important to be aware of one’s blood pressure and keeping it and cholesterol within a healthy range can decrease the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in most fish, may also lower your chances of getting AMD, as will limiting harmful (saturated / animal) fats.

Further, various supplements may be useful in macular degeneration prevention. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) found that antioxidants plus zinc decreased the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration in some people. An eye-specific vitamin supplement containing dosages of A, C, E, zinc, selenium, and copper is recommended by many eye experts for preventative purposes.

It may also be useful to supplement with the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthine, which are currently being researched for their role in promoting eye health; good food sources of these compounds are spinach, kale, and collard greens.

Although this ailment is quite common as we age, there is no need to accept it as a part of aging, and it is crucial to take steps for macular degeneration prevention. Eye health is not unlike the health of any other part of the body in the sense that the best way to care for the eyes is by eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, and protecting them from harmful rays.

Specific vitamins have also been implicated in reducing the risk of macular degeneration, and making an extra effort to consume an adequate amount of these vitamins may have remarkable effects down the road in macular degeneration prevention.

It is important to always think about one’s health for tomorrow today, and taking small steps to prevent macular degeneration in the future can have a significant impact on preserving vision in later years.
