A note about Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Treatment - Useful Nutrients

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Although we do not yet know a great deal about this condition, it has been gaining attention, and research has increased in recent years.

One very important study yielded results supporting the role of certain vitamins in treating macular degeneration. The National Eye Institute sponsored the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) to investigate ways to reduce further vision loss in individuals with moderate to advanced macular degeneration.

The study found that high doses of zinc, beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E are helpful to those with macular degeneration. It is ideal, of course, to talk to your healthcare practitioner before using any of these vitamins for macular degeneration as a supplement, because beta-carotene has been linked to increased risk of lung cancer in smokers, and too much vitamin E can be toxic.

There are other possible reasons why vitamin supplementation may be an inappropriate choice for you as well, so it is probably ideal to talk to your healthcare practitioner about your plans regarding any change in your normal routine or substance intake.

Aside from using supplements as a natural remedy for macular degeneration, changing your diet can yield positive results as well. A number of studies question the effectiveness of supplements, and from an intuitive point of view, the fact is that vitamins and nutrients are meant to come from our food, and if it is at all possible to get them in this manner, it is certainly preferable; this applies to vitamins for macular degeneration treatment as well.

Below is a list of foods that are good sources of the nutrients known to slow the progression of macular degeneration:

Nutrients and Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Treatment

  • Vitamin C: broccoli, tomatoes, citrus fruits, papayas, mangoes, red, yellow, and orange peppers, jicama and kohlrabi, potatoes, and kiwi

  • Beta Carotene: carrots, broccoli, winter squash, sweet potatoes, apricots, pumpkins, cantaloupes, and mangoes

  • Zinc: meats, milk and cheese, yeast, peanuts, beans, wholegrain cereals, brown rice, whole wheat bread, potatoes, and yogurt

  • Vitamin E: wheat germ oil, fortified peanut butter, sunflower seed kernels, oil: sunflower, safflower, corn, soybean; also almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, spinach, broccoli, kiwi, and mangoes

The nutrients in these foods have been scientifically proven to improve the symptoms of macular degeneration. Although further research is needed to entirely understand this phenomenon, increasing these foods in one’s diet is likely to have numerous benefits that extend far beyond eye health.

Vitamins are implicated in the improvement of a variety of conditions, and these specific nutrients and vitamins for macular degeneration treatment are thought to have a rather remarkable impact on people with the condition. Incorporation of good food sources of these nutrients is wise not only for people with this disease, but for others who wish to prevent macular degeneration (and many other diseases) as well.

In deciding whether or not the use of vitamins for macular degeneration treatment is an appropriate one for you, it would be ideal to consult with your health care practitioner and discuss this intention.
