Natural Treatment for Influenza - Home Remedies

Seeking a good natural treatment for influenza?

So many of us know how it feels to get the flu, but not many of us know how to properly treat the flu to ensure that we get better as quickly as possible.

In a normal, healthy adult, influenza can last for about five to seven days, but many people experience the flu for about 10 days, with the worst symptoms lasting for about three to four days.

When you’re dealing with influenza, you’ll probably know. It starts with aches, burning or runny eyes, a runny nose, fatigue, stuffy nose and usually, a cough comes right along with it. Usually, when people have the flu, they will say that they feel like they’ve been run over by a truck, and it’s often not an understatement.

A note about Natural Treatment for Influenza - Home Remedies

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

It’s the treatment for influenza that determines how well and quickly you will recover. If you’re not very run down, your symptoms will likely last for much less time than if you are run down, so it’s important to keep your immune system up and to stay rested.

So, what are some simple, effective and natural forms of treatment for influenza you can use? Here are some tips and suggestions.

  • Consider using a saline spray to help ease nasal congestion. Not only does the saline spray help to break up mucus, but it also helps to remove viruses and bacteria from the nose, which could help speed recovery from influenza.

  • For a sore throat that comes with the flu, gargle with warm salt water, which will help to moisturize the back of the throat and also remove viruses and bacteria.

  • For an itchy throat, consider using a tea with tannin, which will help to tighten membranes. Or, try one of the most common folk remedies and one that many people still swear by - mix hot lemon water with one tablespoon of honey to soothe the throat.

  • When treating influenza, hot liquids like tea can help to soothe inflamed membranes and break up conjestion. Plus, they help keep you hydrated.

  • Another thing that many people do when they are congested and cannot sleep is to have a hot toddy. Mix a cup of hot herbal tea with one tablespoon of honey and one small shot of whiskey or bourbon. Keep the shot small and only have one, as any more can make your symptoms worse. The warm liquid will help loosen congestion and soothe your nose and throat, while the honey will help to ease the scratchy or itching throat symptoms. The alcohol will help you to sleep. An interesting treatment for influenza, isn't it?

  • Consider adding turmeric to a glass of milk three times daily when you are seeking treatment for influenza. This will help to prevent complications that can come with the flu and to activate the liver.

When seeking a good remedy for influenza, it’s important to remember that the most valuable treatment you can give yourself is plenty of rest. Call in from work, get a doctor's note if you need to, but give yourself that long weekend and just get yourself better.

Sleep as much as you can and make sure to stay hydrated. If you don’t feel like eating, that’s okay, but you should consider soups, which can soothe the throat and nose while still offering your body the nutrition it needs. Fresh fruit and vegetable juices are excellent, too.

Ultimately, there is no better flu treatment or prevention than a strong immune system which is functioning optimally. Your efforts at overcoming this ailment should thus focus on this aspect - boosting immunity. Antiviral foods, herbs and supplements should help a great deal, too.
