Vegetarian Daily Diet - some ideas

One’s vegetarian daily diet does not have to be monotonous, bland or boring. There is actually undefined variety and possibilities within vegetarianism. On this page, I share some of my thoughts on improving variety and nutritional content.

What to eat – food selection

  • Eat a various kinds of plant-based foods. You can choose from the following groups – whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, and sprouts.

  • Eat as colorful a diet as you can.

  • Choose whole-grain products over refined grains.

  • If you are concerned about whether your nutritional needs are being met, you may want to consider adding a good whole food supplement to your vegetarian daily diet.

    Food preparation

  • The abovementioned food types can be eaten raw, sprouted, steamed or cooked. Eat a significant portion of your foods raw or sprouted to obtain better nutritional value, especially enzymes.

  • Prepare fruit and vegetable juices for refreshment, superb nourishment, as well as to help satisfy your sweet tooth.

  • Use your blender to create soups, smoothies and similar type foods. They can be delicious!

  • Use herbs and spices freely to give the tastiness of foods you prepare a big boost.

  • Condiments and sauces (be sure to choose the healthier varieties from your health food store) can also be used to improve taste.

    Foods to avoid or limit

  • If you choose to eat dairy products, select the ones which have no fat, or are low-fat.

  • If you choose to eat eggs, limit yourself to one egg yolk every two days.

  • Avoid processed foods, especially refined sugar. Eat as natural and organic as you can.

  • Avoid high fat foods, especially those high in saturated fats.

  • Avoid fried foods.

  • Avoid sweets, especially those which contain refined sugar.

Foods to always have on hand

When you are hungry and need a quick snack, or when you are short on time and are unable to prepare anything elaborate, what you would need are some foods which are quick and easy to prepare or ready-to-eat.

Having such a store of foods would be critical to help you stay committed to your vegetarian daily diet. When one is hungry or in a hurry, that’s when it is the easiest to succumb to temptation and reach out for that candy bar or unhealthy snack.

Some ideas for easy-to-prepare or ready-to-eat vegetarian foods include:

  • Rice – preferably brown rice or wild rice
  • Quick-to-prepare or cook whole-grain cereals, such as rolled oats
  • Ready-to-eat whole-grain cereals
  • Rice cakes or rice chips
  • Whole-grain breads and crackers made from various types of grains such as rye, millet or whole wheat, including pita bread
  • Corn tortillas
  • Canned beans – pinto beans, black beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, etc
  • Canned or packet vegetarian soups, for example broccoli soup or tomato soup
  • Vegetables which can be eaten raw – carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, etc
  • Fruits

Of course, I would always select those made from whole food and organically grown ingredients, and without any artificial chemical additives or preservatives.
