Challenges of Being a Vegetarian

Being a vegetarian comes with many challenges and obstacles and requires your perseverance and discipline. It also entails making sacrifices.

These are some of the challenges you may face in becoming a vegetarian

  • You may have to deal with other people's mindsets, comments, and even ridiculing, for your choice of vegetarianism.

  • You may encounter situations of dilemma. For example, should you attend social functions whereby the food provided is not suitable for vegetarians?

  • You may experience difficulty in finding food, both in terms of dining places and snacks.

  • The more stringent the diet you choose, the tougher it will probably be ( click here for a discussion on the different types of vegetarian diets ). And, the initial period is usually the roughest.

  • You may get lazy and allow yourself to settle into a monotonous routine, eating the same foods almost everyday, and compromising on the need to have a varied vegetarian diet.

  • You may get lazy and just want to reach out for the nearest available piece of food, no matter how unhealthy it may be.

  • You may get bored of your food options, especially with the taste.

  • You may face great temptation, from time to time, to once again indulge in delicious animal-based food products.

  • You may be tempted to eat unhealthy vegetarian foods - for example fried foods, sugary foods, ice cream, etc, to 'make up' for your giving up animal-based foods.

  • You may sometimes feel that you are not nutritionally satisfied, or that you 'lack energy' because you are not eating meat. If you have been eating a wide variety of vegetarian foods, then this feeling is most likely psychological in nature.

  • From time to time, you may experience some bitterness. For example, if you became a vegetarian for its health benefits, but in fact do not yet see any improvement in your health, you may be unhappy that your sacrifices have not yet reaped any tangible results.

  • At some point in time, you may feel that being a vegetarian is becoming quite a drag and a dread, that it is just too difficult.

  • Sometimes, you may feel that this journey is a very lonely one. You may even feel that no one understands you and your food choices.

  • You may face certain mental and psychological obstacles from time to time, where you might question your decision to become vegetarian, and be tempted to want out.
