Water Detox

Water detox is perhaps the oldest method of cleansing and detoxification known to Man.

There is widespread awareness today that environment pollutants are responsible for large amounts of toxins being ingested directly or indirectly, causing carcinogenic diseases and obesity-related ailments and disorders. People are becoming more and more aware that junk food, stimulants like alcohol and other substances, and ill-thought nutrition and diet fads are having adverse and sometimes fatal repercussions.

Hence, there is general awareness that detoxification may be the path to take to ensure better health, immunity against diseases, general vitality and high energy reserves.


Water Fasting

One of the oldest methods of detoxification is by the simple method of water fasting. Water detoxification is known to enhance health and vitality, improve moods, as well as improve the quality of one's sleep.

Though it may seem simple, a water fast could be the most challenging experience that anyone has gone through, and of course most certainly, very rewarding. The process involves stopping the intake of solid food and living only on water. This entails the body shifting focus from the mechanism of digestion and utilizing its energy on eliminating toxins and restoring balance.

This is a self operating mechanism and a credit to the inherent natural intelligence of the human body in knowing what is best for it. Fasting helps the body spring clean its inner workings, providing to the body and the mind rest and rejuvenation that is similar to the effects of sleeping.

Here are a few guidelines to help you on the water detoxification plan:

  • It is recommended that prior to taking on the rigours of a complete water detoxification program, that one eases the body gently into the process, by first commencing a fresh juice and soft, raw food diet for a few days. This will help the body acclimatize itself to what is in store for it with water fasting.

  • A note of caution for those that may be suffering from diabetes, cardiac problems or psychiatric issues - it is better to get the go ahead from your healthcare provider, prior to commencing a water fast.

  • Once you commence the water fast, it is important to note that water directly from the tap is not recommended. This may contain trace levels of heavy metals, salts, pollutants, etc. Distilled or filtered water is recommended. Mineral water can cause adverse reactions, so it should be avoided during a water detoxification fast as well.

  • If you undertake any regular practice of focusing attention via meditation or prayer, this would have to continue during the time span of the water fast. This is to ensure that while the body is in the process of eliminating toxins, your awareness is focused elsewhere.

  • If this is your first time and the water fast is too difficult, it is recommended that water and fresh fruit and vegetable juices be alternated during the duration of the fast.

  • One of the things to look out for while on a water fast is brief spells of dizziness. This is due to the fact that the heart slows down during fasting; hence, sudden movements should be avoided, and movements like sitting or standing should be done slowly. Also, due to the effects of detoxification, impurities in the blood get more concentrated for a while, during which time the individual may experience headaches and / or fever. This should not cause any worry, as it will soon pass when the blood impurity levels go back to normal.

  • If water detoxification is too big a commitment to make, then one should at least drink a minimum of 2 liters of clean, drinking water every day. This will assist the body in flushing toxins out, helps in the efficient circulation of nutrients all through the body, maintains body temperature, and fights bacteria and viruses.
