A note about Water Fasting Weight Loss - Benefits and Disadvantages

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

How long would you need to fast? Would you be able to eat or drink anything other than water? Could water fasting really help you to lose weight?

What’s water fasting really all about, anyway?

Okay, so water fasting is used for many different reasons. For instance, if you’re getting ready to go to the doctor’s office for blood tests, you may need to fast beforehand. This is usually so that the doctor can get a very true reading of your blood tests.

It is usually recommended that you eat or drink nothing at all from a designated time the day before your tests until after your blood tests. However, sometimes, your medical professional will tell you that it’s fine to drink water.

Fasting is also recommended by some health professionals to help your body to “detoxify” itself and give your organs a chance to rest. Many healthy living strategies will recommend water fasting for this reason.

In fact, according to an article in the American Journal of Cardiology, studies have shown that regular fasting could actually lower your risk for problems such as heart disease and diabetes.

The Water Fasting Weight Loss Connection

This is all great, but how about water fasting weight loss effects? Can water fasting actually help you to lose weight?

The jury is still out on this, but some people think that when you embark on a one day fast every week or two, it can help to flush the system of its toxins, and that can help you to more efficiently digest the food you eat.

Longer term water fasts can prove to be far more difficult, which could cause you to break your fast in a harmful manner and actually make you gorge.

The Benefits of Water Fasting Are…

With a water fast, you won’t become dehydrated, that’s for sure, and that can actually help you to stay on track when it comes to fasting. A couple of days spent fasting can help you to feel like you’re cleaning your system and help you to get started on a new, healthy diet; this is an indirect water fasting weight loss link.

When you fast properly, it may take some time for you to resume your regular eating habits, which can also help you to lose weight, as you will want to be consuming lighter, more easily digestible foods for a while.

The Downside of Fasting?

In wanting to obtain water fasting weight loss benefits, you should also be aware of the potential bad points of fasting.

The bad part of fasting is that when done for too long, you can risk damaging your liver and kidneys, and you may wind up causing your metabolism to slow down dramatically, which can actually cause you to gain weight in the long run.

According to an article on WebMD.com, fasting only helps you to lose water weight, and your weight will quickly come back if you go back to eating in your normal manner. In other words, water fasting weight loss effects could very well be temporary, if you are generally consuming a poor diet.

The good news is that if you regularly eat healthful meals and generally get proper nutrition, you probably will lose a little weight from water fasting for a couple of days; however, if you aren’t getting proper nutrition and you wind up fasting, you could do yourself more harm than good.

Concluding Thoughts

If you choose to fast, it should have more to do with maintaining an overall healthy diet and making an effort to lighten your food load. And it will probably be only for a day or two. It's probably not worth it to be doing it for the sake of possible water fasting weight loss benefits alone.

If you want to drop a few pounds for an upcoming event, you might choose to fast for a day or so. But the water fasting weight loss connection is not something which should be relied upon in the long run.

Really, ultimately, it depends on what each individual is looking to achieve in his or her weight loss and health goals. It is definitely better to take a long term, healthy living approach, with an occasional water fast to ease some pressure on one's digestive system, rather than to use water fasting just to meet one's long term weight loss goals.
