What Causes Asthma - Overview, Symptoms, etc

What is asthma, and what causes asthma?

In gist, asthma is a lung condition whereby air flow in and out of the lungs is restricted by inflammation and spasms of the bronchial passages. This causes breathing difficulties. The extent of narrowing of the bronchi could vary, depending on the severity of the ailment.

Asthma is a condition which can strike a person at any age, although it typically begins in early childhood. Statistics indicate that asthma figures in the developed world are on the rise.

Symptoms

Some general symptoms of asthma include breathlessness, wheezing, a bad cough and tightness in the chest. Even excessive yawning and extreme fatigue could be asthma symptoms. There is also the possibility that there could be no obvious asthma early symptom, and the condition could simply begin with mild respiratory distress which slowly increases in magnitude.

A note about What Causes Asthma - Overview, Symptoms, etc

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Causes

It is not straightforward to pinpoint what causes asthma. Generally speaking, it is a hypersensitive response which could come about because of exposure to irritants - these include allergens, infections, as well as stress. It is also highly possible that dietary factors - consumption of chemicals and toxins in our food - play a great part in the development of this disease.

Another significant factor in what causes asthma and its growing epidemic is environmental and air pollution. With our air and atmosphere becoming increasingly polluted with industrial and other wastes, it is no wonder that our lungs are suffering, too. Pollen, mold, fungi, dust, etc, can all contribute. And the hardest hit are usually children, as their bodies are more sensitive to the detrimental effects of external stressors.

One's work environment also plays a part in what causes asthma. Those who are exposed to chemicals, animal fur, smoke, dust and other potential allergens in the course of their work would generally be at higher risk of developing asthma and related respiratory conditions.

A diet which is high in mucus-forming foods, such as dairy products, refined and processed foods, etc, is another likely cause of asthma, as the resultant mucus clogs up the lungs.

Some studies have linked diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis (DTP) vaccinations and tetanus vaccinations to increased risk of allergic asthma. Children and infants who had undergone such vaccinations were shown to have double the risk of asthma, as compared to those who did not.

Once a person, especially a child, has been sensitized to the condition, then exposure to indoor or outdoor allergens could be an asthma attack cause. It is thus important for asthmatics to keep a clean environment.

An asthmatic may sometimes also suffer from other similarly hypersensitive conditions, such as eczema and hay fever. Asthma could be prevalent along family lines, suggesting that genetic disposition could make someone more susceptible to the condition.
