A note about the Health Benefits of Ginkgo Biloba; Methods of Use and DosagesHerbs are God and nature's gifts to us. While the use of herbs and herb remedies has brought excellent results for many people, do note that their health benefits may be limited when they are used in isolation. However, when combined with some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition, the impact on one's health will be greatly magnified. In natural health and healing, we believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases. We also believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man’s understanding. It is thus a good idea to apply these fundamental health steps no matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem. Constituents of Ginkgo The extract of the ginkgo leaves contains flavonoid glycosides and terpenoids (ginkgolides, bilobalides). These substances in ginkgo biloba benefits health in various ways and have been put to good medicinal usage down the centuries. It is mainly used as a memory and concentration enhancer, and sometimes as an anti-vertigo agent. However, studies differ regarding its efficacy. Ginkgo biloba nuts possess ginkgolic acids and ginnol, which inhibit certain bacterial and fungal infections. Fresh ginkgo nuts contain only 3% fat, are rich in niacin, and are also a good source of protein and starch. Methods of Use / Routes of Administration Ginkgo is popularly available as GBE or ginkgo biloba extracts that contain 24 - 32% flavonoids and 6 - 12% terpenoids. Ginkgo is also available in the form of capsules, tablets, and extracts, while dried leaves of ginkgo are available for the purposes of preparing ginkgo tea. The ginkgo leaves are not used directly in the preparation of various herbal medications, but are used in the form of extracts that are popularly known as ginkgo biloba extract (GBE). Ginkgo biloba extracts are used mainly for improving blood circulation. Ginkgo is being used in the preparation of nutrition bars, soft drinks, and fruit smoothies in an attempt to boost memory and enhance cognitive performance. Since it is used in very little amounts for such purposes, the effectiveness is highly questionable, and it is unlikely that the full health benefits of ginkgo biloba can really be reaped this way Ginkgo Dosage - Recommended Dosage of Ginkgo Biloba Ginkgo biloba in small doses may not be effective, while in high doses it may produce side effects. Ideally, ginkgo biloba dosages should range between 120 and 240 mg, in split doses over the span of a day. As with the use of all medicinal herbs, ginkgo dosages should be decided with a touch of common sense. While herbs are all natural and produce far, far fewer side effects and negative reactions as compared to chemical drugs, gradual buildup in dosages is often a good idea.
