A note about Ginkgo Biloba Side Effects, Caution and Contraindications

Herbs are God and nature's gifts to us. While the use of herbs and herb remedies has brought excellent results for many people, do note that their health benefits may be limited when they are used in isolation. However, when combined with some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition, the impact on one's health will be greatly magnified.

In natural health and healing, we believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases. We also believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man’s understanding. It is thus a good idea to apply these fundamental health steps no matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem.

Some even go as far as to say that we should never eat the ginkgo biloba fruit or seed at all.

Overall, these sound like serious ginkgo biloba side effects. However, on the other hand, some health benefits of ginkgo seeds have also been reported. If choosing to ingest them, caution is advised, and moderation is a good idea. It would be preferable to also have a health professional, including herbalists, monitor the situation. These basic steps can help to mitigate any ginkgo biloba danger.

Ginkgo biloba isn’t recommended for children below 12 years of age.

Ginkgo also isn’t recommended for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

For people who are taking ginkgo and need to undergo surgery, it is strongly recommended that they discontinue taking ginkgo at least 36 hours prior to surgery due to the risk of bleeding complications.

Drug Interactions to look out for while taking ginkgo in order to avoid ginkgo biloba side effects

Ginkgo biloba can increase the effect of blood-thinners, and hence should be discontinued while a patient is on blood thinning drugs, as this can increase the risk of bleeding if combined with ginkgo.

Ginkgo may increase the risk of seizures if combined with other drugs or herbs that do the same, such as antidepressants.

Ginkgo should not be used with immunosuppressant drugs like cyclosporine, since it decreases the effect of that drug.

Ginkgo may interact with insulin and other drugs for diabetes.

It shouldn't be used with medications to prevent seizures.

Caution while taking ginkgo biloba

In conditions like bleeding disorders, administration of ginkgo leaf extracts is contraindicated.

Also, in the event of seizures, ginkgo should be discontinued since it puts the patient at increased risk of more seizures.

Studies have shown that ginkgo leaf products may affect blood sugar levels; hence, people with diabetes should be administered ginkgo biloba either under professional supervision and / or with extreme caution.

Thus far, research has not established conclusively whether or not ginkgo biloba during pregnancy is safe. Hence, it should be avoided by pregnant women.
