A note about Graves Disease Diet - Foods to Eat and to Avoid

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

It is thought that many foods actually cause a sort of allergic reaction or trigger the immune system to begin attacking the thyroid, so if you seek to eliminate these highly "irritating" foods from your diet, you might find that you gain relief from many of your symptoms.

Why foods might make a difference

Some studies suggest that certain foods you eat can cause your body to attack the thyroid glands. By eliminating foods which have been found to be triggers, such as soy products and some grains, you may find that your body is less likely to suffer from this condition. It's also important to remove iodine from the Graves disease diet as much as possible, since iodine is the building block of the hormones which will cause your hyperthyroidism.

Also, since Graves disease is an autoimmune condition, it is thought that dietary allergies might be the trigger, so instead of continuing to eat the foods you normally would, consider working to find the source of the allergies and eliminating them from the diet to obtain relief.

What foods can you eat?

One of the first things people ask about when they are considering a Graves disease diet is what they can eat, but really, it should have more to do with what they shouldn't eat. For instance, on this type of diet, one should dramatically reduce iodine intake and cut out anything with red dyes from the diet.

It's also important to avoid sugars and refined grains in your Graves disease diet. You should opt for whole, unrefined grains as much as possible, and stay away from products made from white flour.

You'll also want to stay away from as many preservatives as possible, and trans fats are a big no-no for anyone, so avoid these. Vegetable oils are another negative for this type of diet, too, so look for alternatives for this type of product. Consider olive oil, which can be rich in healthful essential fatty acids and is easy to cook with.

You can, however, eat protein in your Graves disease diet, and lots of it. Consider eating about 60 grams of protein rich foods. Look for extra in nuts such as almonds, peanut butter and even fish such as salmon, which will also give you the high omega-3 fatty acid content which your body really needs right now.

For your Graves disease diet, you should be eating lots of fruits and veggies. Make sure they are fresh, and take the time to think about buying organic produce. Consider all day every day when it comes to eating these products, because they will help to keep you from feeling hungry, and you'll get much of the nutrition your body is lacking.

In the case of dairy products and calcium, some people have found that by consuming the lower or no fat versions of their usual favorites, they can reduce the discomfort they experience from eating and drinking these products, but they can still enjoy them. Also, you should know that many times, when a person is told to eliminate cheese and milk, yogurt is a high calcium alternative which isn't so detrimental to an individual's overall health.

When you are seeking a diet for Graves Disease, you need to remember that the most important element is self-education. Keep in mind that you are the one who will be eating the Graves disease diet and living with this condition, so ultimately, the more you can be informed of which foods are helpful and which ones are not, the more likely you are to see the healing results you're looking for.
