A note about Indigestion Gas - Causes, Symptoms, Other Information

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Although having gas is a natural occurrence, it can be uncomfortable at times, and even embarrassing.

The most common types of gas, including indigestion-caused gas, have typical symptoms: abdominal pain, belching, bloating, and flatulence. As these symptoms are fairly common for a number of disorders, it is best to understand what causes gas as well as ways to reduce symptoms and treat the underlying problem.

Gas in the digestive tract (this includes all parts from the colon to the esophagus) comes from one of two main sources - swallowed air (eating too much, too fast), and the natural breakdown of foods within the intestinal tract. Gas is primarily made up of particular vapors present or created within the system for manufacturing enzymes as well as for breaking down the foods.

These vapors consist of carbon dioxide, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and even methane in some people. They are primarily odorless and are a part of everyday gastrointestinal life. Any unpleasant odor of flatulence (rectal gas) comes from the mixture of un-digestible foods with certain bacteria in the colon that produce and release gases containing sulfur.

Indigestion gas occurs because the body cannot digest or absorb certain carbohydrates (the starches, sugar, and / or fiber of many foods) in the small intestines due to a lack of certain enzymes needed for digestion. These undigested foods are passed along to the large intestines (colon), where friendly bacteria go to work on them, breaking them down and, in the process, producing gas before either digestion or elimination can take place. In the meantime, this indigestion gas builds and must be eliminated through either belching or flatulence.

These foods that cannot be digested and are passed on include sugars such as lactose, which is the natural sugar in milk and found in milk products (cheese and ice cream) as well as processed foods (bread, cereals, and some salad dressing), as well as sorbitol, which is found naturally in fruits (apples, peaches, pears and prunes).

Fructose is naturally present in carbohydrate foods such as artichokes, onions and wheat. Fructose is also used as a sweetener in some soft and fruit drinks. Raffinose, a complex sugar, is found in abundance in legumes (beans). It is also found in lesser amounts in asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, many other vegetables, as well as whole grains.

Many starches (corn, pasta, peas, all types of potatoes and grains excluding rice) naturally produce gas as they are broken down in the digestive tract. This is why some meals cause more fullness and feelings of indigestion gas than others.

Fiber is another plant substance that may cause indigestion gas, particularly soluble fiber. It does dissolve easily in water to take on a soft, gel-like texture, but cannot be broken down until it has passed from the small to the large intestines. It is found in such foods as oat bran, beans, peas, and most fruits.
