A note about Severe Indigestion - Causes, Tips and Remedies for Relief

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Severe or bad indigestion is usually caused by the quick expansion of the stomach, which could be caused by overfilling. This can occur when you have eaten too much too quickly. In addition to making pressure on the abdomen, it can also cause stomach acids to rise up into the esophagus. The feeling of pain and discomfort can last hours until the stomach has had time to digest all of the food properly.

Severe indigestion can also occur in people who have stomach ulcers, although the pain will probably feel different from the pain that usually accompanies the ulcers.

Sometimes, severe indigestion can be one of the first symptoms of food poisoning. If faintness, nausea, vomiting, chills, sweating, or diarrhea accompany the bad indigestion, then you should seek medical attention. It is important to keep fluids in your system, since dehydration is one of the leading causes of death when it comes to food positioning.

Many times, serious indigestion can be alleviated by moving your mealtimes up and trying not to eat so close to bedtime. In addition, eating smaller meals more frequently and eating more slowly might also be helpful in curbing the symptoms that accompany indigestion.

Stopping when you are full and not eating if you are not hungry are good ways of preventing indigestion. You should also try to avoid fatty and fried foods, as well as stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine.

It is also important to avoid strenuous exercise activity after a meal, although getting exercise on a regular basis is a good idea. Most people find that their indigestion worsens when they are lying down, so try to stay upright at least an hour after eating.

Natural Remedies and Treatments

There are a variety of natural methods that can be used to treat severe indigestion.

Peppermint can provide relief from stomach cramps and gas. You can find peppermint in tablet form, or you can also find it in tea form, which can be soothing to your stomach as well. Adding a little bit of lemon to the tea can also be helpful.

Chamomile tea is another tea that can have antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and gas-relieving effects, which are all good at soothing indigestion. Honey can be added to chamomile tea in order to sweeten it up.

Slippery elm bark in tea or tablet form helps form a protective coating in the stomach.

Ginger in tea or tablet form reduces bloating and pain and can also help with nausea. You can purchase ginger in many forms, including beverages, crystallized form, cookies, and even suckers.

Other Points to Note

It is important to remember that, sometimes, severe indigestion can be attributed to something more serious, such as a heart attack. For that reason, it is important that if your severe indigestion is accompanied by a numbness or pain in the chest, back, jaw, or either arm, that you be checked out by a physician.
