TCM Sleep Disorder Treatment

In TCM sleep disorders are viewed as either a deficiency of Chi or Qi energy (vital energy), or a surplus of Qi energy in the kidneys and heart.

The underlying philosophy is that the kidneys like all other main body organs store energy. When this is compromised the outcome of the same is sleep disorders.

A note about TCM Sleep Disorder Treatment

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. Taking these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of certain holistic remedies.

Also, a natural product of the ageing process is that the energy reserves of the kidney are depleted. If the kidney is tonified, this depleted energy can be replaced with the help of herbal remedies. If not, sleep disorders are likely to occur.

Deficiency of endorphins (natural painkillers in the body) also causes insomnia. Violent emotions, too, are thought to be contributing factors which impair liver Qi, causing insomnia and mental derangement.

Poor diets that include excessive consumption of greasy food also results in retention of fluids and phlegm in stomach, leading to insomnia. In addition, depletion of the liver and kidney essence results in palpitations and insomnia.

In TCM sleep disorders such as insomnia are caused by the aforementioned factors. The different types of insomnia can be listed as:

  • Inability to fall asleep quickly.

  • Awakening shortly after falling asleep and being unable to resume sleeping for long durations of time.

  • Inability to sleep soundly, not feeling refreshed on waking up.

  • Inability to sleep, period.

TCM, or Traditional Chinese Medicine, recommends that it is advisable to go to bed early for optimum benefits. 9:00 P.M. sleep time is the most ideal time for retiring for the night.

    TCM Sleep Disorder Treatment

TCM is of the viewpoint that in order to treat sleep disorders properly, it is first very important to establish whether the condition is resulting from excess of Qi energy or deficiency of Qi energy. Deficiency of blood and Yin energy is responsible for deficient Qi and excessive Qi energy is caused by imbalance of stagnant liver Qi which is transformed into fire.

In TCM sleep disorder treatment, deficiency of Qi is addressed by reinforcing Qi, replenishing blood and nourishing Yin to eliminate deficient fire, thereby resolving the condition.

On the other hand, excess Qi energy accumulation is addressed by clearing the liver and purging the fire, bringing about harmony and tranquility to blocked energetic channels.

TCM uses acupuncture to resolve problems of sleep disorder very effectively. Qigong and herbal medication are used less for this condition.

Also, acupressure, which is a sister branch of the science of acupuncture, relies on the same meridian points as acupuncture. Here, finger pressure is used rather than needles, to stimulate points along the meridians to energy channels running through the body network.
