A note about Bad Sunburn - Natural Treatments and Home Remedies for Relief

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Sunburn - it is one of the biggest seasonal problems of the blazing summer sun. And if truth be known, it takes months for the skin to return to normal once it has been burned, and sunburn has been linked with skin cancer later on in one's life.

The first thing anyone should do concerning bad sunburn (or any sunburn for that matter) is to avoid or prevent it. Try to avoid being outside during the hottest periods of the day, and try not to stay out in the sun for too long. If you have to, minimize your exposure by protecting your skin with suitable clothing and headwear.

Unless you have been swimming in chlorine, do not shower / bathe in the first few hours, as this will strip away any natural oils. If there is dirt involved, you can use a cloth with mineral or olive oil to gently wipe it away.

Mineral oil based lotion for moisturizing (baby oil) can be purchased at any store, but the best agent has a plant based extract as its main ingredient. This makes a light moisturizer that is easy for the body to absorb. For pain, try ibuprofen or Tylenol and essential oils such as lavender (which promotes new skin growth), which works well for pain, especially when used in conjunction with aloe for the burns.

Probably the best known natural treatment for burns, including bad sunburn, is aloe. Aloe gel works well in treating burns as well as in aiding your skin reach its normal balance once more. You will need plenty, though, as the burnt skin soaks up the gel like a sponge. If you do not have a plant, gel can be purchased. Do find a product that contains a high percentage of the gel.

If nothing else, yogurt is a pretty decent substitute to use for bad sunburn. Apply liberally to the sunburn, rubbing it gently into the skin. Let it sit and soak for about 10 minutes before rinsing with cool, pure water. Pat skin dry, repeating treatment as needed in the first few days.

Another possible natural sunburn herbal remedy involves the use of green tea. Make a green tea compress by pouring boiling water over 1 teaspoon of loose green tea. Cover, let sit for 5 minutes, and then mix with an equal amount of cool water. Allow to cool completely before soaking cloth and applying to burned skin (for 10 mins). Apply to your bad sunburn as needed throughout the day.

After the first 3 to 4 hours, and once you have begun skin hydration therapy, take a cool bath, adding 1 cup of each to your water: black tea and apple cider vinegar. The black tea will help reduce swelling, while the vinegar will help soothe the pain of bad sunburn. Add several drops of lavender essential oil to enhance the effect.

The use of antioxidants is always in order to aid the immune system fight infections and heal the body. During the first week, take some vitamin A along with 400 IU of vitamin E and 1,000 mg of vitamin C. Broadly speaking, we prefer and recommend natural, whole food supplements, as supposed to single-nutrient or single-substance ones.
