A note about Home Remedies for Sunburn Relief - Natural Treatments

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

With second degree sunburn, the inflamed skin swells and is very tender and painful. Blisters are generally large because of burns that have gone beneath the first layer of skin. Fever, chills, nausea and vomiting may be present.

So what are some good home remedies for sunburn treatment?

Following a bad case of sunburn, with skin inflamed, blisters can follow quickly. Cooling the skin needs to take place just as quickly. Do this with a towel / compress dipped in one of the following substances to help in the healing process.

Dip a cloth into cold water from the tap with a few ice cubes and lay it over the burn. Repeat as the cloth warms, several times a day. A cup of skim milk added to 4 cups water along with a few ice cubes provides the soothing properties of a protein.

Make a soak with oatmeal wrapped in cheesecloth. After water has been run through the cheesecloth, soak compress and apply to burn every few hours. You can also use witch hazel for temporary relief. Baking soda can be mixed into water, dabbed onto the burns, and left to dry for relief.

What are some other useful home remedies for sunburn relief?

A good alternative for larger burn areas is a cool bath - no soap. Add liquid as needed to keep the water at a comfortable temperature. A cup of apple cider vinegar can be effectively used in water as well. Gently pat your skin dry - do not rub, so as to prevent further irritation.

For reducing pain and inflammation, or itching after a soak (and to help with dryness), moisturize the skin with a lotion or cream such as Eucerin, a vitamin E oil or lotion, or something with menthol. If you chill the cream, it will bring you added relief.

Another of the home remedies for sunburn is a paste of cornstarch and water, which can be applied directly to the burns, as can vegetable slices such as potatoes, strawberries or cucumbers. They are cooling and work well in small burn areas or on the face.

The tannin from soaked tea bags works great on eyelids that have been burned. If you have an aloe vera plant, you can break off a leaf tip and use the gel - this is one of the excellent home remedies for sunburn with good healing properties.

It is especially important to eat well during this time. Several small light meals will work best. A diet of fruits and vegetables, along with some lean protein, will help provide the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients your skin will need to repair itself. Rest is also imperative at this time. Get as comfortable as you can and rest as you can. These dietary and lifestyle tips form an important part of using home remedies for sunburn treatment.

It takes up to six months for skin to return to normal after sunburn that has developed blisters. With the top layer of skin peeled off, exposed skin is much more sensitive. It is important that you guard your skin as you can burn twice as fast as you did the first time. Be especially careful between the hours of 10am and 4pm, as this is critical ultra violet hours.
