A note about Essential Oil Acne Treatment

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. Taking these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of certain holistic remedies.

When treating acne, remember to take into account your skin type and the form of acne you suffer from, as this will determine which oils you respond to best. For instance overly oily skin responds well to patchouli; however, dry skin would be worsened if treated with a daily astringent enhanced with this oil. Dry skin can be treated with lavender or eucalyptus.

Also remember that many essential oils should be diluted when used topically, especially with sensitive skin. An essential oil acne treatment process can take some time, upwards of a year, but the result will be healthy glowing skin without the myriad of harsh side effects (such as peeling, dry skin) possible when using over the counter chemical applications.

General practices, to be used in conjunction with an essential oil acne treatment regimen, include meticulous cleansing (morning and evening). Use a gentle approach so as not to aggravate already sensitive skin. Scrubs should be avoided as they can irritate the clogged pores. Wash gently with a pH balanced soap with warm water, and rinse with cold. Take that last two or three minutes of a shower cold if you can, as this will also condition your pores. Make a natural astringent without all the harsh chemicals and alcohol by boiling a stem of fresh thyme and then allowing the plant material to infuse the water for five minutes. Add a little lemon juice to increase the antiseptic properties and use as a daily astringent.

Facial steams open pores and increase circulation, toning the skin. To begin, combine your essential oils with hot water in a large bowl or basin. Generally, use 3 drops of oil for every 4 to 6 cups of water. Swathe your head and shoulders in a plush towel, and keep your head away from the water, eyes closed, allowing the steam to drift about you. Repeat for 15 to 20 minutes approximately 2-3 times a week.

Remember that the water should not be boiling, but hot enough to generate a comfortable sauna-like atmosphere. Follow this ritual with a toner or facial spray to close the pores, and a quick cold water dousing. The following oils have been found to be especially useful in essential oil acne treatment:

  • Bergamot – Useful as a compress or in lotions and creams.

  • Chamomile – Make an herbal tea, which can be sipped or used for warm compresses. One can also try Calendula, Clove, Eucalyptus, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Niaouli, Palmarosa, Rosewood, Tea Tree, or Thyme.

Always use caution when trying new oils in essential oil acne treatment. Test to make sure you do not experience an allergic reaction. Use suitable carrier oils, such as jojoba, to dilute the essential oil before applying, as the essential oil can be too harsh on skin.

A well-balanced diet, with plenty of fruits and vegetables, will also improve the appearance of skin, as will proper hydration and time in nature and the open air. Dietary changes should eliminate those processed foods which can trigger a breakout, such as greasy fried foods.

Certain individuals can have sensitivities to other foods which too can stimulate the over production of oil in the sebaceous glands. Exposure to the sun will reduce the appearance of acne overtime, but be sure to do it moderately and avoid sunburn.
