A note about How to Cure Insomnia Naturally - Diet and Lifestyle Habits

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

With estimates indicating that as much as fifty percent of all adults suffer from insomnia at some point, there is a clear need for an effective remedy to this problem.

Often, the treatment for insomnia involves prescribing an extremely strong medication, and indeed, misuse of sleep medications is an extremely serious and prevalent issue today. Not only are sleep medications known to create dependence, but they can also be extremely dangerous - even leading to death in some instances.

Individuals suffering from insomnia, or physicians treating insomnia, should make every effort to avoid propagation of the "pill to cure all" mentality that pervades much of modern medicine. There are many lifestyle modifications and small changes that can be made for how to cure insomnia.

If you or a loved one suffers from insomnia, one of your first steps in how to cure insomnia naturally should be to look closely at your diet. There may be things that you have not even thought of that are contributing to your insomnia; fortunately, many of these factors are rather easy to alter. For some people, digesting a large dinner can prevent the onset of sleep, so it may be wise to eat larger meals for breakfast and lunch, along with a lighter dinner.

Another thing to consider in how to cure insomnia is the old remedy of warm milk when one cannot sleep; your grandmother knew what she was talking about, because science backs up the ability of milk to promote sleep.

Milk contains tryptophan, which is an amino acid known to encourage sleep and feelings of fatigue. Skim milk is generally a better option than whole fat milk.

Carbohydrates also have a tendency to create a feeling of tiredness; when broken down in the body, they help our bodies produce a chemical called serotonin, which induces sleep. Some sleep-promoting carbohydrates include fruit, pasta, potatoes, oatmeal, and brown rice.

Another important thing to consider in how to cure insomnia naturally is caffeine intake. Think about how much caffeine you consume in coffees, teas, and soda. These contribute to the body’s inability to relax and go into sleep mode more than many people realize. There are also many less obvious foods that contain caffeine, which may interfere with your ability to sleep without you even knowing. Chocolate as well as some candies are "hidden" sources of caffeine.

Lifestyle habits are another consideration when dealing with insomnia. Exercise is a great way to help regulate the chemicals in the body that may contribute to insomnia.

Another thing to consider in how to cure insomnia naturally is the role of nicotine, if you are a smoker. Nicotine is a stimulant and is likely to activate the body in such a way that sleep becomes nearly impossible, particularly if you smoke at night.

An erratic sleep schedule is also a common contributor to insomnia, and if you struggle with insomnia, it is probably wise to stick to a strict schedule of times to go to sleep and times to wake up. This helps the body "understand" when to begin the process of falling asleep.

There are many alternatives to medication for insomniacs. Rather than prescribing (or taking) a pill to chemically induce sleep, one should look at the habits that may be interfering with sleep. Additionally, adjusting one’s meals, incorporating certain foods, and exercising more may relieve the bodily mechanisms that prevent sleep from occurring, thus contributing to how to cure insomnia naturally.

Medication should be a last resort in treating insomnia, as it can be cured by small, simple changes that are easy to make so that individuals with insomnia can stop suffering through sleepless nights and exhausted days.
