A note about Varicose Veins During Pregnancy - Causes and Remedies

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

When valves fail to function properly, the blood cannot travel up toward the heart as it should. This results in pooling and pressure throughout the length of the veins. It is known as venous insufficiency.

Some people develop varicose veins more easily than others, perhaps because of genetics or the aging process. Other conditions such as being overweight or having a job which requires standing for prolonged periods puts undue pressure on the veins in the legs. They may develop a feeling of heaviness, or become tired, achy, and / or painful. Symptoms may worsen after becoming pregnant.

On a good note, varicose veins during pregnancy have a tendency to improve once birth has been given - this is particularly true if the veins have become spider web or gnarled tree in appearance or it is a first time pregnancy. There are a number of ways that can help if varicose veins during pregnancy do not disappear readily.

Because varicose veins are caused by pressure on the veins in the legs, it is important to take care of your legs first and foremost. Because varicose veins in turn often lead to thin, dry or leathery skin, it is also important to practice good skin care. Because the integrity of the blood vessels are being compromised, it is important to help maintain them in any way we can and to promote good leg / blood circulation.

We may not always be able to prevent varicose veins in certain instances, but we can minimize their impact on our bodies if we exercise everyday (even if it is just a short walk), if we maintain a healthy weight range, if we keep ours legs elevated when the chances arise, and if we lay on the left side when sleeping or resting to relieve pressure of the uterus on our legs and feet.

In the event you begin experiencing pressure in the legs or a heavy tired feeling, special support stockings can help with varicose veins during pregnancy. They are thicker than panty hose and keep the legs compressed, making it easier for the blood to continue up the legs toward the heart. If the pressure is bad in the ankle area, you may be experiencing blood pooling, and it will help greatly to pull the stockings on before you even get out of bed.

To help with varicose veins during pregnancy, eat foods that are high in fiber, as they will promote good bowel movements as well as provide the body with the nutrients it needs to help maintain a healthy immune system. Center all meals on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, seeds and nuts. Refrain from such foods as salt and alcohol in excess, fried foods, processed and / or refined foods, sugar and foods with excess sugar in them (cereals, sweet rolls), as well as animal protein, including cheese and ice cream.

Also, as you combat varicose veins during pregnancy, choose fruits such as berries, citrus fruits, apricots and cherries, because they are rich in bioflavonoids for good circulation, as well as being able to promote healing and strengthen vein walls. These are also filled with vitamins A, B, C and E, which help skin integrity, promote healing and strong blood vessel walls, while helping to relieve pain. Zinc will be needed so that the vitamins can be properly utilized by the body.
