A note about Yeast Infection in Children and Infants - Causes and Treatment
In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.
In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.
As they feed at mom's breast, they are introduced to lactobacillus acidophilus and bifido-bacterium, two major beneficial bacteria groups that will play an important role in their health for the rest of their lives.
These groups of bacteria (known as probiotic) provide the baby with its first line of defense against other bacteria, microbes, parasites, pathogens and / or viruses that can potentially cause them harm. Colostrum and other antigens the mother provides from her milk stimulate and build the immune system.
The number one cause of yeast infection in children is an over abundance of antibiotic use. When this occurs, there is need to strengthen the immune system and avoid the introduction of any other fungi (mold) into their bodies. Maintaining a good balance of bacteria in their digestive system is essential.
Yeast infections most often flare up and then heal in most people with just a few diet adjustments, but in the case of yeast infection in children or newborns, especially those with weakened immune systems, yeast can cause serious or chronic problems.
Thrush is yeast infection of the mouth and throat and is the most common type of infection in newborns. It is visible on the tongue and appears as creamy white patches on the tongue and inside of the mouth.
Diaper rash, another common infant condition, can be heightened by an untreated yeast outbreak. This occurs because yeast loves warm moist places and can grow rapidly in the perfect conditions of the diaper area. The compounded rash can become fiery red with raised red border areas. These can be treated easily with an antifungal antibiotic topical cream. Change diapers frequently, keeping the area cleansed and patted dry. Use cornstarch only with mild diaper rash, with disposable diapers a good option for keeping the skin dry.
To help deal with yeast infection in children, meet the needs of your child through whole food nutrition as well as supplement their diets with anti-oxidants, vitamins, and minerals. This should include healthy doses of raw fruits and vegetables, including yogurt for their probiotic properties. Steer children away from peanut butter (unless organic), as peanuts are contaminated worldwide, along with corn and yeast products.
This is also important for children who are susceptible to ear infections - this ailment is also typically due to the overgrowth of Candida or yeast infection in children. They can be caused by unknown sources or, in swimmers, where water recurrently gets trapped in the ears.
As part of trying to overcome ear yeast infection in children, eliminate dairy, fast foods, all processed foods, and follow the above guidelines. Basil leaves can be crushed for their juice and dropped into ears to help with pain as well as aid in the fight against the infection. Garlic cloves boiled in a small amount of water, then smashed, can be put into the ears as well. Warm olive oil and other herbal oils can also be safely used in children's ears.
