Myths Uncovered

The myth surrounding it all is that high blood pressure is a disease - that is simply not true. High blood pressure is your body’s reaction and protection against other things going on. There are certainly elements that contribute being causes for high blood pressure, such as age, race, gender, and a genetic predisposition. Though these are contributing factors in an individual who may be diagnosed with hypertension, this condition is preventable, and it doesn’t take as much as you might think.

Living a healthy lifestyle full of regular and effective exercise coupled with a good diet full of rich nutrients is the very best weapon in ensuring that your body doesn’t give in to the potential that you will develop high blood pressure someday. Why is this the best weapon? Because it directly counteracts the main causes for high blood pressure. You can beat hypertension, and even if you have already been diagnosed, you can bring your blood pressure down. The choice is yours in most cases.

There are, of course, always exceptions to the rule, and there are in fact some health conditions that can themselves be direct causes for high blood pressure. In such cases of secondary hypertension, conditions such as tumors or kidney disease can contribute to or even cause high blood pressure. This is a rarer occurrence though, as hypertension is usually quite preventable.

Preventing the Culprit

Prevention is key, particularly if you know that you are at risk based on some of the pre-disposed conditions. So what can you do to really prevent or lower high blood pressure?

Exercise is obviously important. And it’s also about some of the food choices you make. Eating a diet that contains excess sodium salt is not going to be helpful in preventing or combating high blood pressure at all. Further, some people have a sensitivity to salt, and therefore intake of it can cause blood pressure to skyrocket in these persons. It’s a good idea to ensure that you don’t consume too much salt. And it’s not just about table salt, too, as sodium salt can appear in processed foods where you least expect it.

Further, being overweight is another of the possible causes for high blood pressure, and keeping your weight at a healthy range is one of the most important factors in preventing the condition.

And it’s also important to bump up the fiber quotient in your diet. Fiber can not only help you feel full longer to prevent you from overeating, but it can also help the body in proper digestion. By adding bulk along the way, fiber helps in elimination, too.

In addition, it’s recommended that elements like alcohol or refined sugars should be avoided, which really should be undertaken as part of a healthy lifestyle anyway.
