A note about Herbs for Hypertension Treatment

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

The reader should note that when seeking herbal supplements and remedies to treat hypertension, be sure to pay attention to labels and look for products made by nationally known food and drug manufacturers and reputable natural health distributors. Preferably, look for companies which use or buy from growers who use organic or sustainable farming methods to cultivate and harvest their stock. Generally speaking, fresh herbs have more potency, though this varies by herb and by supplier.

Several herbs have the secondary effect of lowering blood pressure, as they work primarily on increasing blood flow to the kidneys (like a mild diuretic) and thus prevent the bladder infections and kidney problems sometimes associated with high blood pressure (HPB). Such herbs for hypertension relief include asparagus, borage, dandelion, fennel, hawthorn, hibiscus, juniper, linden blossom, parsley, sarasparilla, saw palmetto, and yarrow.

The following herbs for hypertension have been used for decades or even centuries in the treatment of HPB and its symptoms.

Useful Herbs for Hypertension

  • Broom (Scotch, not butcher’s) (Cytisus scoparius), a tall woody shrub native to Europe, has traditionally been used to treat a range of cardiovascular conditions.

  • Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa), a perennial plant native to North America, has been used for some time in Eastern Europe to treat various disorders and diseases of the circulatory, pulmonary, and nervous systems. Modern research supports the use of black cohosh as one of the herbs for hypertension. Modern Russian herbalist healers have used the herb as a central nervous system tonic, in addition to treatment for high blood pressure.

  • Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalicroides), traditionally used by women during childbirth and as a contraceptive, has also been found to decrease blood pressure, although most herbalist practitioners will prescribe one of the other herbs in this list before recommending this one.

  • Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliaturn), called agueweed by settlers in North America, contains potent nutritive properties know to increase vitality and well-being and used for centuries by Native Americans. Diterpenes and flavonoids, both found in abundance in this herb, have been shown to be effective in treating hypertension.

  • Dong quai (Angelica sinesis), called Chinese angelica or “female ginseng”, has been used for centuries by Chinese healers, in conjunction with other herbs for hypertension and treatments such as acupuncture.

  • Gotu kola (Centella asiatica), used extensively by Ayurvedic practitioners, alleviates high blood pressure, which is seen to be primarily a Pitta imbalance (though it affects other dosha-types as well).

  • Hawthorn (crataegus oxyacantha, a fruit bearing shrub or small tree, has been much studied for its positive effect in treating this disease. Like boneset, hawthorn contains flavonoid glycosides, in addition to procyanidins, saponins, and tannins compounds. Hawthorn works directly in treating many cardiovascular diseases by acting as a vasodilator, improving blood flow, energizing the heart muscles, and protecting coronary arteries against the formation of plaque.

  • Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), often used in the essential oil form, may be helpful as an herbal treatment as well.

  • Javal devil pepper (Rauwolfia serpentina) used for centuries in India, has not had many scientific studies done on its beneficial properties in the West.

  • Myrrh, also often used in essential oil form which harvesters extract from the gummy sap of the tree native to the Middle East, has been shown to reduce cholesterol Myrrh helps reduce and therefore can counteract the effects of a fatty and toxic diet.

  • Modern herbalists use sanicle (Sanicula europaea), a plants native to India, less frequently than other herbs. However, it has long been esteemed for treating a variety of blood disorders.

  • Skullcap root (Scutellaria baicalensis), a member of the mint family native to China and Russia, has been used to treat blood pressure disorder in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. The root has a flavonoid substance called baicalin, which appears to be the active ingredient in its highly successful work. In china, the root can be combined with herbs to make a tea tonic.

  • Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), best known in the West as a treatment for sleep disorders like insomnia, is also among the useful herbs for hypertension. The valerenic acid inhibits an enzyme that breaks down GABA (Gamma-amino butyric acid), which in turn controls blood pressure. The sedative effect may also work to ease high blood pressure.

  • Wild cherry bark (Prunus serotina), from the tree native to North America, differs from the ornamental variety grown in the Far East (China and Japan). Also called Chokeberry due to its bitterly sour taste, the bark has been used by Native Americans to ease many conditions including coughs, sore throat, lung ailments and diarrhea. As it works like valerian in that it has mild sedative properties, many people find it beneficial as herbs for hypertension.
