A note about Natural Remedy for Hair Loss and Balding - Herbal Treatments

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Here, some useful herbal treatments and remedies are discussed.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto extract has been found to work wonders in fighting benign prostatic disease (enlarged prostate) by lowering levels of DHT - a known cause of androgenetic alopecia, especially in men. This condition has been linked to an increase in the same hormones related to hair loss - androgens, including testosterone - and at least some experts believe that saw palmetto may work much like the hair loss drug finasteride (Propecia or Proscar), which was originally developed to treat prostate enlargement.

Saw palmetto is a potentially useful natural remedy for hair loss. However, women on oral contraceptives or hormone therapy should not take this herb.

Green Tea

Green tea is a natural remedy for hair loss which can be a safe alternative for women on contraceptives, and some studies have shown that green tea may influence blood concentrations of hormones linked to at least one form of genetic hair loss known as androgenic alopecia.

Japanese researchers found that drinking green tea could increase levels of the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in women. Since this biochemical binds testosterone, the more SHBG present in a woman's body, at least theoretically, the less testosterone will be in her bloodstream. This process may block the chain of hormonal activity that initiates some forms of hair loss, making green tea a potentially useful natural remedy for hair loss and balding.

Traditional Herbs and Herbal Remedies

You could also find a natural remedy for hair loss from other folklore treatments involving herbs and plants, which include:

  • licorice extract - thought to prevent hair loss, but can also increase blood pressure

  • horsetail - which is a source of silica, a component in healthy hair

  • apple cider vinegar and sage tea applied directly to the scalp - thought to stimulate hair growth

  • psoralea seeds - a Chinese herb applied to the scalp

  • ginger - either taken as a tea, encapsulated or applied to the scalp

Another herb is nettles, usually taken in the form of nettle root extract, which has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating hair loss. Nettles serve as rich sources of vitamins A and C, which are beneficial in inhibiting DHT production and promoting hair growth; this helps explain its usefulness as a natural remedy for hair loss.

Nettle root extract also has several key minerals and lipids that can be beneficial to the hair, and has been used successfully as a natural remedy for hair loss in Europe for many years. Rosemary and sage have shown benefit traditionally when used externally.

You will want to boil together in water the rosemary, sage, peach leaf, nettle and burdock to create an infusion. Then strain the loose herbs from the liquid and use the liquid to wash the hair daily, or as a rinse to rejuvenate the scalp.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil will soothe individuals predisposed to seborrhea, eczema, psoriasis, or dandruff. Mexicans and southwestern Native Americans have used jojoba oil traditionally for centuries to promote hair growth and control dandruff. Jojoba oil acts as a hypoallergenic conditioner for skin, as it has wonderful moisturizing properties and mimics the scalp's own sebum.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera, too, has been used by Native Americans, Indians and many in the Caribbean to promote healthy hair and prevent hair loss. Aloe works as a natural remedy for hair loss and balding as it can help the scalp by healing it and balancing the pH level, while at the same time cleansing the pores.

A common preparation of aloe vera gel with a small amount of wheat germ oil and coconut milk can be used in place of commercial shampoo and has traditionally shown great benefit. You can also keep an aloe plant in the bathroom and massage the scalp with the beneficial leaf gel.

More Herbs and Herbal Treatments as Natural Remedy for Hair Loss

Here is more information on herbs and herbal treatments which can be used as a natural remedy for hair loss and balding:

  • Artichoke leaves - Simmer in water for several hours and applied as a nightly massage to the scalp

  • Catnip - Create an infusion and rinse through the hair daily.

  • Henna, a traditional Indian herb, acts as a natural conditioner and can be excellent for the maintenance of healthy hair. It can help heal the hair shaft by repairing and sealing the cuticle, protecting hair against breakage and loss of shine. Women in India have used it as part of their beauty regimen for centuries.

  • Maidenhair fern spores - Use boiled in wine vinegar or water and massage into the scalp weekly.

  • Mallow roots - Boil in wine vinegar or water and massaged into the scalp weekly.

  • Nettles - Infuse in water and comb through the hair daily.

  • Parsley seeds - Crushed and applied in powder form to the scalp monthly. The powder can remain overnight, and gently brushed out of the hair in the morning.

  • Rosemary - Boil in a tea and rinse the hair daily.

Conclusion

Other herbs which may be added to natural hair loss remedies include quince, which has been used in Arabia to increase the growth of the manes and tails of prized horses, jaborandi, boxwood shavings, nutmeg, willow leaves, and cloves. Any of these herbs can be made into a tea or infusion, and rinsed through the hair on a regular basis to promote hair growth, as discussed above.

Although rapid hair growth may not be the result of using natural hair loss remedies, they remain natural and completely safe, and should bring about increased hair growth when used consistently. Furthermore, none of these remedies should cause side effects when used topically, which is not the case with some synthetic topical solutions that promote hair growth or regeneration.

However, if you have any doubts about using herbal remedies or any natural remedy for hair loss and balding on your own, consult a qualified natural health or herbal practitioner first.
