A note about Natural Cures for Headaches - Useful Treatments and Remedies
In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.
In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.
For many of us, the instant (and somewhat reflexive) reaction to the onset of a headache is to reach for a pill to make the pain go away. As growing evidence points to the potential damage some of the over-the-counter medications commonly used for headaches can cause, the need for alternative cures becomes increasingly pertinent.
Herbs and Herbal Remedies
A few different herbs make excellent headache remedies. Peach juice and apricot nectar can help to eliminate any headache-associated nausea. When it comes to herbal cures for headaches, a fair amount of attention has also been given to ginger's headache-curing properties. Some other herbs to try include ginkgo biloba, kava kava, valerian, and peppermint.
Alternative Therapies and Treatment Modalities
Aside from methods of self-help, there are several alternative therapies that are known to be helpful for individuals who suffer from chronic headaches, and could thus be useful as cures for headaches.
Acupuncture, the ancient therapy that uses tiny needles to promote the body's circulation of "chi" or energy, is thought to be helpful for managing the pain of headaches. Chiropractic care is also said to provide relief from headaches in some cases.
Massage therapy is known to reduce stress and tension whilst increasing feelings of relaxation. There has not yet been significant research performed on massage as a treatment for headaches, but it certainly has merit as a potential means by which to relieve chronic headaches - particularly those that are thought to be related to muscle tension.
What other potential cures for headaches are there?
The ability of meditation to improve a wide variety of symptoms is often overlooked, but this positive effect is likely to be heightened in the instance of headaches; meditation can help in the management of headache pain and promote relaxation.
There are many different methods of meditating, and it is probably best to develop one's own procedure, but a good way to get started is by focusing on something simple such as a single word / phrase or your breathing. As you focus on this for an extended period of time, your mind should become clear and a restful state (ideally accompanied by headache relief) should be achieved.
Biofeedback can also be used to produce more "relaxed" bodily processes - that is, one can produce a lowering of the heart rate, etc, which should in turn create a relaxation of muscles that should reduce headache pain.
Ultimately, relief from headaches is a matter of what works for you as an individual, for the precise cause of headaches is not presently known, and certainly would differ between individuals and situations.
The variety of treatments and remedies available, coupled with a sense of personal responsibility over one's lifestyle choices (i.e. maintaining an awareness of things that may trigger one's headaches) mean that it is not necessary to suffer through headaches or settle for over-the-counter pills. Indeed, there are many natural cures for headaches which are safe and effective.
