A note about Different Types of Migraines

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man's understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. No matter how remote or unrelated a health condition may seem, these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of specific natural health remedies.

Unfortunately, most people do not understand this, with employers being the worst and failing to understand that a migraine can take an employee out of action for several days. It is quite unfortunate that millions of people suffer from migraines, yet they do not have even the most basic information on migraines.

The majority of people who get migraine attacks are women. In fact, a quarter of all women are migraine sufferers. It is also quite unfortunate that most doctors misdiagnose the root cause of the migraine, which means that most of those afflicted rarely are completely cured. The emphasis by medical professionals seems to be on prescribing painkillers, which do not address the problem and instead lead to chemical dependency.

There are many different types of migraines, each with a different trigger. All types of migraines are vascular headaches, which are caused by shifting size of arteries within and around the skull. This vascular dilation is what causes the migraine. There are basically seven types of migraines, namely:

  • Migraine without an Aura - this type of migraine does not cause any visual problems but will last for about four hours. It can be triggered by a variety of factors ranging from stress to a poor diet.

  • Migraine with Aura - this type of migraine begins by causing visual problems. Your vision may be fuzzy or you may experience tunnel vision or even hallucinate. It points to some underlying neurological problem which needs to be diagnosed.

  • Hemiplegic Migraine - most people who suffer from this migraine have a family history of it. It typically begins with paralysis of some part of the body or loss of sensation, and then the headache begins in about an hour. It also points to some underlying neurological condition.

  • Ophthalmoplegic Migraine - this is associated with the eyes and specifically the optic nerve. It points to some problem with the optic nerve (s) or some other eye condition.

  • Retinal Migraine - closely related to the Ophthalmoplegic Migraine, this migraine manifests itself with complete loss of vision in one eye.

  • Basilar Artery Migraine - this migraine is quite rare. It manifests by causing dizziness and confusion. The sufferer also loses balance and speech can be impaired. The head throbs and there is ringing in the ears. It mainly afflicts young women and adolescent girls.

  • Abdominal Migraine - pain usually occurs in the abdomen, thus it is difficult to diagnose as a migraine. The patient gets nauseated, vomits and there is diarrhea.

Once the root cause of the migraine is identified, the best treatment is behavioral therapy, where you are taught how to control pain through relaxation and changes in lifestyle. Excellent alternative migraine treatments for different types of migraines include:

  • Chiropractic Joint Manipulation - manipulation of the joints and spine eases muscle tension and encourages relaxation.

  • Acupuncture and Acupressure - research has shown that acupuncture is good for migraine management by reducing their frequency and intensity. Acupressure stimulates the body's pressure points through massage

  • Feverfew - Feverfew contains Parthenolide, which prevents the production of vessel dilating chemicals.

  • Aromatherapy - the scent of heated rosemary has helped some people relieve migraine pain.
